From inspiration to opportunity: Motorsport UK puts inclusion at the heart of growth

29 September 2026

Motorsport has rarely enjoyed greater visibility, but turning that attention into participation remains a very different challenge. Motorsport UK’s new Inclusion Impact Report provides evidence that targeted programmes can begin to close that gap – while its new Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy signals a shift from individual initiatives towards changing the wider system.

From inspiration to opportunity: Motorsport UK puts inclusion at the heart of growth

Supported by Mission 44, the charity founded by seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, three programmes – Race for Diversity, Girls on Track Regional Hubs and the Motorsport UK Inclusion Hub – have reached 38,426 people across the UK over the past three years.

Turning reach into impact

The scale is significant, but the outcomes behind the headline numbers are more important. Some 4,300 young people have been directly supported, more than 90% of whom are from Pupil Premium backgrounds, while the programmes have generated 212 training or employment opportunities and worked with 60 school and charitable partners.

There has also been a 28% increase in students from ethnically underrepresented backgrounds choosing STEM subjects at GCSE. Participants reported greater confidence, stronger professional networks and better understanding of potential careers, with some progressing towards apprenticeships, university courses, volunteering and employment.

Hugh Chambers, Chief Executive Officer of Motorsport UK, said:

“This work matters deeply because the future strength of our sport depends on the people we welcome into it today.”

He added that talent, ambition and curiosity needed to be recognised “regardless of background, gender, ethnicity or circumstance”.

Building pathways into motorsport

The partnership with Mission 44, which has supported Motorsport UK since 2022, illustrates the potential for collaboration to move beyond awareness and create tangible routes into an industry which can often appear difficult to access.

Jason Arthur, CEO of Mission 44, said:

“These programmes connect young people with industry partners, hands-on experiences, and the confidence and networks needed to turn ambition into opportunity.”

The Inclusion Hub reinforces that approach by helping people discover opportunities across volunteering, education, participation and careers, rather than presenting motorsport purely through the lens of driving.

From programmes to systems change

Perhaps the most significant element is what comes next. Motorsport UK’s 2026-2030 EDI Strategy acknowledges that, despite progress, barriers around culture, confidence, access and visibility remain. Crucially, it identifies the need to move from individual “initiatives” towards “whole-ecosystem transformation”, supported by better data, consistent behaviours and clearer standards.

That matters because inclusion cannot ultimately be measured by the number of programmes delivered. The longer-term test is whether people from different backgrounds can enter motorsport, progress within it and feel that they belong.

Motorsport UK describes its challenge as closing the gap between motorsport’s visibility and participation, arguing that removing barriers and embedding inclusion into how the sport is “accessed, experienced and governed” will help it grow sustainably.

That broader approach is reflected in the Global Sustainable Sport SPI Index, where Motorsport UK currently sits inside the Global Top 100, with a C: Purpose Established rating. The latest impact report offers growing evidence of what sits behind that position: moving beyond commitments towards measurable participation, opportunity and long-term social impact.
