Shanghai puts health and well-being at the heart of table tennis

29 September 2026

Table tennis will put health, inclusion and human connection centre stage in Shanghai next month when the city hosts the biggest World Table Tennis for Health Festival yet. But alongside the social impact being created through the ITTF Foundation, a new commercial partnership for the sport highlights another part of the sustainability equation: how stronger participation, purpose and profile can ultimately support prosperity.

Shanghai puts health and well-being at the heart of table tennis

A global gathering for health

From 20–25 October, Shanghai will welcome 227 players living with Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s from 24 countries and territories across four continents. It is the first time the Festival has been staged outside Europe and comfortably surpasses the 189 players who participated in the previous edition.

China will provide 119 players, many experiencing international competition for the first time, while another 108 will travel from overseas. The field is also strikingly balanced, with 103 women and 124 men. Beyond the competitions, the World Table Tennis for Health Congress on 23–24 October will extend the event into knowledge-sharing, research and education.

Building a legacy before the first ball

Importantly, Shanghai’s impact is already beginning.

Earlier this month, the ITTF Foundation, working with the Chinese Table Tennis Association and Shanghai Table Tennis Association, delivered a two-day capacity-building course for 64 grassroots coaches and physical education professionals from across China. Participants learned how table tennis can be adapted to support people living with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative conditions.

The emphasis was not simply on staging an event, but leaving knowledge behind.

Zhang Yi, Associate Professor at Shanghai University, described how exercises could be adapted for individual needs: “One player had limited finger dexterity, so we replaced the item on his left side with paper cups. After every rally, he had to put three fingers of his left hand into a cup and flip it over.”

Those completing the programme qualified to design and deliver table tennis programmes supporting people with neurodegenerative conditions in their own communities – turning a six-day international festival into potentially much longer-term local impact.

From one table to thousands of stories

The Shanghai initiative builds on a rapidly expanding global health programme. World Table Tennis Day 2026 generated 1,130 registered celebrations involving an estimated 407,153 participants across 140 countries and territories, with 95% of celebrations linked to health and well-being.

Its reach extended particularly strongly to children and young people, women and girls, people with disabilities and older people.

As World Table Tennis Day promoter Sharon Reakae observed following an initiative with Special Olympics Botswana: “Table tennis is more than a game, it is a gateway to health, confidence, and inclusion.”

Connecting people with prosperity

That growing social footprint provides an interesting backdrop to ITTF’s latest commercial move. Infront has been appointed worldwide lead agency for ITTF and World Table Tennis marketing rights under an eight-year agreement running to 2034, tasked with expanding global partnerships and the sport’s international commercial reach.

ITTF President Petra Sörling said “this partnership will help build long-term partnerships that support the continued growth of the sport worldwide”, while Infront President and CEO Philippe Blatter pointed to table tennis’s “extraordinary global following and significant potential for further growth”.

For a sport organisation, these are not separate agendas. Shanghai demonstrates how table tennis can connect people through participation, health and inclusion; the Infront agreement seeks to translate the sport’s global reach into stronger commercial value.

Currently sitting inside the GSS SPI Global Top 150 with a C: Purpose Established, ITTF provides a useful illustration of the relationship between the People and Prosperity pillars: creating meaningful social impact while building the partnerships and commercial foundations capable of sustaining and scaling it.
