Johan Cruijff ArenA becomes world’s first B Corp certified stadium

18 August 2026

The Johan Cruijff ArenA has become the first stadium in the world to achieve international B Corp certification, marking another significant step in the evolution of sustainability and social impact across the global sports venue sector.

B Corp certification recognises organisations that meet standards covering social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability, independently assessed by the non-profit organisation B Lab. For the Amsterdam venue, the certification brings together years of investment across environmental sustainability, accessibility, community engagement and innovation under a broader approach to responsible business.

Tessa van Soest, Executive Director of B Lab Benelux, said the ArenA’s position as a major sporting and entertainment venue gives the certification particular significance: “As a venue where millions of people come together each year for sport, culture and music, the ArenA has extensive social reach. It therefore adds a powerful voice to the movement of businesses that link success to responsibility for people, the environment and society.”

From sustainability initiatives to business strategy

Perhaps the most important aspect of the certification is that it recognises sustainability and social impact not as a collection of individual projects, but as part of the ArenA’s wider business model and its ambition to become Net Positive.

Over the past 15 years, thousands of solar panels have been installed on the stadium roof, while the ArenA was an early adopter of large-scale battery energy storage. It no longer uses natural gas and energy-efficient cooling, dispensing systems and building sensors have helped reduce energy consumption by 22%.

Attention has also turned to catering. Beef burgers were replaced with chicken alternatives generating 72% less CO₂ per burger, while 18,000 PET soft-drink bottles were replaced with drinks served on tap during last summer’s concert season.

The social dimension is equally important. Initiatives include audio description for visually impaired visitors, talent development and employment programmes, and partnerships with communities in Amsterdam South East.

Tanja Dik, CEO of Johan Cruijff ArenA, believes certification should be viewed as another stage in that journey.

“Certification is not an endpoint; it is a next step. We will continue to invest in sustainable and social initiatives and share our knowledge with stadiums and other organisations.”

Thirty years – and looking forward

The achievement comes as the ArenA celebrates its 30th anniversary. Opened in 1996, the stadium has developed into a home for football, music, innovation and social engagement, welcoming millions of visitors over three decades.

A special 30th anniversary celebration will take place at the ArenA on 30 September, bringing together partners, colleagues, local residents and others who have contributed to its journey. Significantly, the event is being positioned not simply as a reflection on the past, but as an opportunity to look towards the future.

Becoming the world’s first B Corp certified stadium provides an appropriate milestone. As sports venues increasingly seek to demonstrate their contribution beyond the events they host, the ArenA is showing how sustainability, social purpose and commercial resilience can become integrated parts of the same long-term strategy.
