Hydrogen Takes Centre Stage at Le Mans Sustainable Innovation Event

23 June 2026

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has brought hydrogen-powered mobility into sharp focus through the second event in its 2026 Sustainable Innovation Series (SIS), held at the iconic Le Mans circuit ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Organised in partnership with the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), the event brought together leaders from motorsport, industry, technology and government to explore how racing can continue to act as a catalyst for sustainable innovation.

Hydrogen Takes Centre Stage at Le Mans Sustainable Innovation Event

From Track to Road

For more than a century, the 24 Hours of Le Mans has served as one of the world’s most influential proving grounds for automotive innovation. Technologies first tested under the pressures of endurance racing—from disc brakes to hybrid powertrains—have often found their way into everyday vehicles.

Today, that same tradition is being applied to hydrogen propulsion, sustainable fuels and energy-efficient technologies. The setting itself reflected that ambition. The ACO recently renewed its three-star accreditation under the FIA Environmental Accreditation Programme, the highest level available, underlining Le Mans’ commitment to environmental leadership as motorsport navigates the transition towards lower-carbon mobility.

“Le Mans has always been where the future of the automobile is written,” said Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest. “Welcoming the FIA Sustainable Innovation Series to the home of endurance racing highlights our shared ambition that hydrogen and sustainable technologies will shape the next great chapter of our sport and of mobility.”

Opening the event were Fillon, Frédéric Lequien, Chief Executive Officer of Le Mans Endurance Management, Stéphane Le Foll, Mayor of Le Mans, and Marek Nawarecki, FIA Circuit Sport Director, who collectively outlined a vision for endurance racing’s continuing role in driving technological and societal progress.

Hydrogen Moves from Concept to Competition

Hydrogen was the dominant theme throughout the programme, reflecting its growing importance within both motorsport and the wider mobility sector. Representatives from Toyota Racing, TotalEnergies, MissionH24, Ariane Group, Michelin, Goodyear and Ford Racing joined FIA experts to discuss the opportunities and challenges involved in bringing hydrogen technologies to scale.

Importantly, the discussions were not limited to theory. During race week, several hydrogen-powered prototypes took to the track, including the Toyota TR LH2 Racing Prototype, Alpine Alpenglow and Ligier Bosch JS2 RH2. Together, they offered a glimpse of what the future of endurance racing—and potentially wider transport systems—could look like.

According to Xavier Mestelan Pinon, FIA Chief Technical and Safety Officer, the significance of these developments extends far beyond motorsport itself.

“The 24 Hours of Le Mans embodies the spirit of endurance and innovation that defines the Sustainable Innovation Series,” he said. “The advancement in hydrogen technology pioneered by regulators, manufacturers and partners together will help deliver safer, cleaner and affordable mobility far beyond the racetrack.”

Sustainability Beyond the Race Car

The event also demonstrated that sustainability in motorsport extends beyond vehicle technology. Alongside hydrogen, discussions examined sustainability within the tyre industry and the wider motorsport supply chain.

The final session featured a fireside conversation with Paul Fowler, Vice President Motorsport Global at DHL, exploring how specialised maritime freight solutions are helping reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting teams, vehicles and equipment around the world.

The discussion highlighted an increasingly important reality for global sport: achieving sustainability goals requires action across entire operational ecosystems. From logistics and infrastructure to procurement and energy systems, meaningful progress depends on collaboration between multiple stakeholders.

A Laboratory for Sustainable Innovation

The FIA launched the Sustainable Innovation Series to create a platform where motorsport, business and government can share solutions to some of the most pressing sustainability challenges facing society. Following events in Montréal and Le Mans, the series will next travel to Shanghai alongside the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

The significance of the Le Mans discussions lies not simply in the emergence of hydrogen as a future racing fuel, but in motorsport’s continued ability to act as a real-world laboratory for innovation. As regulators, manufacturers and technology partners work together to overcome the challenges of decarbonisation, endurance racing is once again positioning itself at the forefront of the transition from track to road.

That broader commitment is increasingly visible across the FIA’s sustainability agenda. In the recently published GSS SPI Index, the FIA is ranked among the Top 100 most purposeful sports organisations globally, reflecting its efforts to embed sustainability, governance and innovation across the organisation. As hydrogen technologies move closer to mainstream adoption, initiatives such as the Sustainable Innovation Series demonstrate how sport can help accelerate solutions with relevance far beyond the finish line.
