Pure Promise: A Game Plan for a Greener Scandinavian Championship in Handball
The Men's EHF EURO 2026 is set to be more than just a handball tournament; it's pioneering a new standard for ecological responsibility in sport. For the first time, the three host nations, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, have united under a single, ambitious sustainability concept called Pure Promise. This initiative aims to place environmental consciousness at the very heart of the championship, acting as a "green guiding star for the sustainability efforts".

Seven Promises, One Priority
At its core, Pure Promise is built on seven key focus areas, with the approach tailored to each host city and arena. However, the direction is clear, and one area has been prioritised above all others: water. This focus is a nod to the host nations’ shared heritage of clean drinking water and protected marine ecosystems, a resource they recognise is not guaranteed worldwide.
The commitment to water preservation will be visible throughout the event. Plans are in place to provide reusable water bottles and drinking stations for players and staff, use Tetrapak containers where bottled water is essential, and ensure all arenas and hotels use environmentally certified cleaning products. It’s a practical application of their guiding principle: “we want to contribute to a more sustainable world by doing what we can, where we are”.

A Mascot with a Mission
To bring this green message to life, the championship has introduced an official mascot. With a head shaped like a water droplet, this friendly character serves as the official ambassador for Pure Promise, tasked with engaging fans and the wider community. The mascot will be a visible presence in arenas, schools, and clubs, sharing simple, fact-based messages called ‘Pure Facts’ to make sustainability easy to understand. In the mascot’s own words, “I’M HERE TO SPREAD KNOWLEDGE, CURIOSITY AND ACTION – FROM SEA TO COURT!”. These facts will highlight impactful statistics, such as “ONE FULL BUS CAN REPLACE UP TO 40 CARS” and “PLASTIC BOTTLES IN THE WILD CAN TAKE UP TO 450 YEARS TO BREAK DOWN”.

Everyone Can Do Something
The organisers are keen to stress that this is a collective effort. Supporters, volunteers, and partners are all seen as “key players” in making the championship a success, both on and off the court. The initiative is underpinned by a simple yet powerful motto: “Not everyone can do everything – but everyone can do something”.
Fans will be encouraged to get involved through interactive campaigns, including a ‘Water Quiz’ that not only educates participants but also contributes to a water-related charity and offers a chance to win final tickets. Through this shared commitment, the Men’s EHF EURO 2026 hopes to create a lasting legacy that truly travels from sea to court.
