Sustainability
In the broadest sense, sustainability refers to the ability to maintain or support a process continuously over time. In business and policy contexts, sustainability seeks to prevent the depletion of natural or physical resources, so that they will remain available for the long term. Sustainability is often broken into three core concepts: economic, social and environmental.
Assessing the sustainability of a sports organisation is extremely challenging in the current environment
There is an increasing pressure to be seen to do the right thing and to be accountable and transparent but there are no comprehensive frameworks for the sports industry
There are a mix of programmes and frameworks but none that comprehensively assess the sustainability of a sports organisation
Existing frameworks include the SDGs, the UNFCCC, GRI, ISO Certifications and ESG frameworks
GSS aims to bring these frameworks together into one comprehensive structure for sport
The Sustainable Pillars of Sport
Sport has a broader framework than ESG and needs to recognise that host cities and governments, brands and fans are now focusing on more sustainable outcomes.
Sport has traditionally focused on Profit (Economic) and Profile (Media) outcomes at the expense of Planet (Environmental) and People (Social).
GSS has developed a standard framework that aims to capture the true value of sport.
The framework has been designed by combining different ESG frameworks and other reporting methods.
The GSS framework has been defined as the seven “Sustainable Pillars of Sport”
The Sustainable Pillars of Sport are:
- Partnerships (Working Together)
- Participation (Sport)
- People (Social)
- Planet (Environment)
- Power (Governance)
- Profile (Media)
- Prosperity (Economic)
