UEFA Kicks Off New Era of Sustainability with ‘4R’ Circular Economy Push

03 October 2025

UEFA has unveiled a significant update to its environmental strategy, launching new Circular Economy Guidelines to champion sustainability across all football operations. Timed to coincide with the UN’s International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on 29th September, the initiative marks a strategic pivot towards a more sustainable future for the beautiful game.

UEFA Kicks Off New Era of Sustainability with ‘4R’ Circular Economy Push

The updated guidelines are built around a simple yet powerful ‘4R’ framework: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover. This new approach aims to embed circularity deep within the football ecosystem, targeting four key areas: food and beverage, apparel and equipment, event materials, and energy and water consumption. To help clubs, leagues, and national associations implement these changes, UEFA has developed a clear, eight-step roadmap, guiding stakeholders from initial analysis to reporting their achievements.

A senior UEFA spokesperson commented on the launch, stating, “Football holds a unique position to inspire millions, and with that comes a profound responsibility. Our move to a 4R framework isn’t just about environmental policy; it’s about future-proofing our sport. We are providing a clear playbook that empowers everyone, from grassroots clubs to major tournament organisers, to make meaningful, lasting change.”

These principles are already being put into practice. UEFA has successfully piloted circular strategies at its flagship events, including recent club competition finals, UEFA EURO 2024, and the Women’s EURO 2025. Collaborating with major partners like PepsiCo and Heineken, these efforts have yielded impressive results. At EURO 2024 in Germany, for instance, a remarkable 40 tonnes of surplus food were redistributed, preventing waste and supporting local communities8. Other successful initiatives include the rollout of zero-waste catering models and campaigns to reduce single-use plastics through reusable containers.

With the guidelines now public, UEFA is issuing a call to action for the entire football family to get involved. The organisation is encouraging stakeholders to use its bespoke checklists to conduct food waste audits, host zero-waste matchdays, and engage fans and communities in redistribution campaigns.

“The success we saw at EURO 2024 proves what’s possible when we work together,” the spokesperson added. “We’ve shown that major sporting events can be a force for good. Now, we invite our clubs, sponsors, and, most importantly, the fans to join us. Every small action, from separating waste at a stadium to a club launching a redistribution programme, contributes to a larger victory for sustainability.”

By providing the tools and a clear strategy, UEFA is determined to ensure football not only delivers excitement on the pitch but also leads the way in environmental stewardship off it, making the sport a true catalyst for change.
