FISU Oceania Charts Sustainable Course with “Our Green Path” Strategy

13 March 2026

FISU Oceania has unveiled its long-term sustainability strategy, “Our Green Path,” marking a significant step in the federation’s commitment to climate action through to 2030. The strategy builds on the organisation’s decision in 2022 to become a signatory to the United Nations Sport for Climate Action framework — a notable commitment for a small, volunteer-led continental federation.

A Regional Challenge with Global Responsibility

Operating across one of the world’s most geographically dispersed regions, FISU Oceania faces unique environmental challenges, particularly the reliance on air travel to maintain connections across the Pacific. Despite being a not-for-profit organisation without the environmental footprint associated with hosting major sporting events, the federation has chosen to take proactive steps to reduce its impact.

Joining the UN Sport for Climate Action initiative was therefore both a symbolic and practical move. As the organisation explained, becoming a signatory was “a bold step for our small, volunteer-led federation,” but one driven by the recognition that sport organisations of all sizes have a role to play in addressing climate change.

Turning Strategy into Action

Launched following extensive research and planning, “Our Green Path” outlines a framework for reducing emissions and embedding climate-conscious practices across university sport in Oceania.

Several initiatives are already underway.

One of the most visible measures is a commitment to blue carbon investment. For every flight taken by the federation, AUD $25 is allocated to blue carbon projects within the Pacific, supporting ecosystems such as mangroves and seagrasses that naturally absorb and store carbon.

The federation has also taken steps to reduce travel requirements, while maintaining strong engagement with its member organisations. Where physical meetings remain necessary, sustainability considerations are now embedded in planning and operations.

Beyond travel, the organisation has adopted more sustainable procurement practices, reducing promotional merchandise and prioritising recycled and environmentally responsible materials sourced locally wherever possible.

Education also forms a central pillar of the strategy. Through digital sustainability campaigns, FISU Oceania is raising awareness among students, universities and sporting stakeholders about the role sport can play in climate action.

Partnerships Driving Progress

Collaboration sits at the heart of the initiative. FISU Oceania has joined the Sports Environment Alliance, enabling the federation to share knowledge and collaborate with organisations working to accelerate climate action in sport.

At the same time, the federation is working with Global Sustainable Sport to explore programmes that can be implemented within communities across Oceania, while also developing partnerships with universities to support research into sport and climate action.

These collaborations aim to ensure the strategy remains grounded in evidence-based practice, while helping university sport act as a catalyst for wider environmental awareness across the region.

Looking Towards 2030

While acknowledging that many elements of the strategy are still evolving, FISU Oceania has made clear that the direction of travel is set.

“Our Green Path” represents an important step in embedding sustainability into the governance and culture of university sport across Oceania — demonstrating that even smaller, volunteer-driven federations can play a meaningful role in advancing climate action in global sport.
