Chicago’s Golden Run: Marathon Delivers Record £590 Million Economic Boost
The 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon has once again proven to be a powerful economic engine for the Windy City, generating a remarkable $756 million (approximately £590 million) in total economic impact. An independent study conducted by Jones & Associates Economics found that the race delivered a 7.5% increase in economic contribution compared with 2024, extending a decade-long trend of sustained growth for the event and the wider Chicago region.
A Global Magnet for Tourism and Jobs
The marathon’s influence stretches far beyond the finish line in Grant Park. In 2025, the event welcomed 55,744 participants and visitors, a 4% rise on the previous year, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s leading mass participation sporting events. More than 75% of runners travelled from outside Illinois, bringing significant spending power to the city’s hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues.
This influx of visitors does more than fill hotel rooms—it helps sustain the local workforce. The report estimates that the marathon supported 5,186 full-time equivalent jobs, representing a 7.4% increase in employment impact year-on-year.
Kristen Reynolds, President and CEO of Choose Chicago, highlighted the race’s role in enhancing the city’s global reputation.
“Each year, this iconic race draws runners and their supporters from around the world to our city… It’s events like this that reinforce Chicago’s standing as one of the world’s great destinations for global events and unforgettable experiences.”

Philanthropy at the Heart of the Event
While the economic impact figures are impressive, the Chicago Marathon’s charitable legacy remains equally significant. The event’s official charity programme raised $47.1 million for a wide range of local, national and global non-profits.
When wider indirect contributions are included, the race’s total charitable impact exceeded $136 million, representing a 27% increase on the previous year.
Carey Pinkowski, Executive Race Director of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, credited the community spirit behind the event’s success.
“The unwavering commitment of our participants and spectators—from their months of training to their incredible fundraising efforts—is the heart and soul of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. We are proud to see these collective efforts result in such a significant positive impact for the city.”

Looking Ahead to 2026
With record results still resonating across the city, preparations are already underway for the 48th edition of the Chicago Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, 11 October 2026.
More than one million spectators are expected to line the streets once again as tens of thousands of runners take on the course, which winds through 29 of Chicago’s vibrant neighbourhoods, offering participants what organisers often describe as an architectural and cultural tour of the city.
Rita Cook, President of Bank of America Chicago, emphasised the broader impact of the event:
“Beyond the dollars and cents, this event unites our community, supports local businesses and provides a powerful platform for charitable fundraising. It demonstrates our long-standing commitment to the people and city of Chicago.”
