Centreville Bank Stadium Nets Top Sustainability Honour Ahead of Earth Day

24 April 2026

Centreville Bank Stadium has been recognised as a national benchmark for sustainable sports infrastructure, securing a 2026 Play to Zero Award from the Green Sports Alliance ahead of Earth Day.

The accolade highlights the Pawtucket-based venue’s rapid emergence as a leader in environmentally responsible design and operations, achieved within its first year of opening. It also signals a broader shift in expectations for new-build sports venues, where sustainability is no longer an add-on but a core design principle.

A Benchmark for Modern Stadium Design

Since opening in May 2025 as the home of Rhode Island FC, Centreville Bank Stadium has positioned itself at the forefront of sustainable venue development in the United States.

Notably, it is the only USL stadium to receive a 2026 Play to Zero Award, underlining its status as a standout example within professional football infrastructure.

The Play to Zero Awards recognise organisations delivering measurable progress across energy, waste and climate impact—areas increasingly central to how sport defines leadership beyond the field of play.

“Earning recognition from the Green Sports Alliance is a significant moment for our stadium,” said Paul Byrne, General Manager of Centreville Bank Stadium. “As the world marks Earth Day, it reinforces our belief that world-class venues can lead the way in sustainability.”

A Fully Electric Future

At the heart of the stadium’s approach is its all-electric design. Centreville Bank Stadium is the first 100 per cent electric-powered, soccer-specific stadium in the United States, operating entirely without fossil fuels.

This positions it among a small but growing group of venues globally that are redefining energy use in sport.

The stadium integrates a range of energy-efficient systems, including full LED lighting with automated controls, high-efficiency heat pumps for heating and cooling, and energy recovery systems designed to reduce overall consumption.

Beyond operations, sustainability was embedded from the outset of construction. Built on a redeveloped brownfield site, the project incorporates reclaimed wood, recycled steel, and advanced stormwater management systems—demonstrating a lifecycle approach to environmental impact.

From Design to Daily Operations

Importantly, the stadium’s sustainability strategy extends well beyond its physical infrastructure.

Operationally, Centreville Bank Stadium diverts more than 80 per cent of its waste through recycling and composting programmes, while eliminating traditional single-use plastics across the venue.

Water efficiency is also prioritised, with water-saving fixtures and integrated systems designed to manage and reduce consumption across high-traffic event days.

These measures reflect a growing recognition across the sports industry that operational behaviours—not just design—are critical to achieving meaningful environmental outcomes.

“As the world marks Earth Day… from being fully electric to how we manage waste and resources every day, this was a core part of our vision from the start,” Byrne added.

A Multi-Use Venue with Broader Impact

While sustainability sits at its core, Centreville Bank Stadium is also establishing itself as a major multi-use destination.

Alongside football, the venue is set to host events including the Premier Lacrosse League, Women’s Lacrosse League fixtures, the Island Rhodes Music Festival, and a comedy performance by Bill Burr.

Named Best New Venue of 2025 by SportsTravel Magazine, the stadium is demonstrating that high-quality fan experiences and environmental responsibility are not mutually exclusive.

Raising the Bar for the Industry

The recognition of Centreville Bank Stadium points to a wider shift in the role of sports venues as drivers of environmental progress.

By combining fully electric design, circular construction principles and strong operational performance, the stadium offers a clear blueprint for future developments—not just in the United States, but globally.

As the sector faces increasing scrutiny over its environmental footprint, projects like Centreville Bank Stadium suggest that the next generation of venues will be judged as much on their sustainability credentials as their atmosphere on matchday.
