The non-profit organisation creates products that raise awareness and funds for environmental causes, and the collaboration with Messi will focus initially on the creation of a collectable sculpture of the forward’s world-famous left boot.

Karün, a company focused on regeneration and manufacturing sustainable products, is producing the item from recycled nylon plastic sourced from discarded ropes and PET caps, as well as recycled fibreglass for durability.

The recycled materials have been sourced from Patagonia, Indonesia, China, Thailand, India and other destinations.

Karün’s traceability system and Blockchain technology will allow for digital carbon labelling on each product, while also presenting interactive tracking of the materials’ journey.

Proceeds from sales of the collectable will go to the Join The Planet Foundation to support environmental initiatives, including river and ocean clean-ups, and reforestation schemes.

Currently with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami CF, Messi, an eight-time FIFA World Footballer of the Year winner, is the first ambassador to team up with the Join The Planet project.

“Lionel Messi’s role as the inaugural ambassador for Join The Planet brings unparalleled influence to global culture,” said Thomas Kimber, Director of Join The Planet Foundation.

“Messi’s involvement means reaching millions of people who are not part of the environmental discussion. We look forward to the positive impact his advocacy will have on our shared goals.”

The inaugural project carried out by the Join The Planet Foundation will see the cleaning and conservation of the Paraná River in Rosario, Argentina – the home city of Messi.

“With effort and a sense of community, we can take care of the planet,” added the footballer.
