Competing in the UIM E1 World Championship presented by PIF, Team AlUla operates at the intersection of sport, technology and electric marine mobility. Its decision to become a signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change initiative reflects an ambition to use that platform to demonstrate how innovation and elite sport can contribute to environmental change.

From electric racing to climate action

Joining the Framework places Team AlUla alongside sports organisations including Formula 1, Formula E, the NBA, SailGP, the Premier League, the International Olympic Committee and World Athletics in working collectively to accelerate climate action through sport.

For Team AlUla, the commitment builds upon its sustainability strategy, Powered by Data. Driven by Impact, which focuses on using data, technology and collaboration to deliver measurable impact.

John Marlow, Co-Team Principal of Team AlUla Championed by LeBron James, believes competing in the world’s first all-electric powerboat championship provides an important opportunity to demonstrate what sport can achieve.

Joining the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework helps to provide a clear framework we can follow and reinforces our commitment to protecting the places where we race and supporting the communities that we visit.”

Building environmental partnerships

The UNFCCC commitment forms part of a broader environmental programme. Team AlUla is already a signatory to the Sports for Nature Framework and has developed a partnership with WATR, using smart environmental monitoring technology to collect water-quality data at E1 race venues.

The team also supports the University of Reading’s Climate Stripes campaign. Created by Professor Ed Hawkins, the distinctive blue-to-red graphics communicate long-term temperature change and are displayed prominently on Team AlUla’s RaceBird, bringing climate awareness directly into the visual identity of the racing team.

Scott Over, Co-Founder and CEO of Sporting Giants, which has supported the team during the 2026 season, described joining the Framework as a “natural next step” in Team AlUla’s sustainability journey.

“We are proud to support the team in building partnerships and initiatives that create meaningful, measurable impact.”

Taking impact to host communities

Team AlUla is also looking beyond the racecourse. When the E1 Championship travels to Luanda, Angola, for its inaugural event next month, the team plans to work with a local NGO on a series of environmental and community-focused projects ahead of the racing.

For a relatively new team, the combination of electric racing, climate commitments, nature initiatives, environmental monitoring and community engagement is beginning to establish a broader sustainability platform.

The challenge now will be translating those commitments into measurable outcomes. With its emphasis on being “Powered by Data” and “Driven by Impact”, Team AlUla has created an expectation that its progress should increasingly be demonstrated not simply through activity, but through evidence of the environmental and social impact it delivers.
