Launched during the FIFA World Cup Final weekend in New York, The Playable Future Blueprint presents what is described as football’s first operational framework for embedding climate adaptation into grassroots infrastructure, tournament legacy programmes and long-term investment. Alongside it comes the Playable Future Coalition, a player-led movement calling on football’s biggest competitions to leave behind more than stadiums and participation programmes, but a lasting legacy of climate resilience.

Protecting Football’s Foundations

The Blueprint starts with a simple but increasingly urgent reality. Climate change is already affecting where, when and how football can be played. Extreme heat, flooding and severe weather are disrupting grassroots football, placing local clubs and community pitches under growing pressure. Rather than treating these impacts as isolated incidents, Football For Future argues they should now shape how major tournaments invest in their legacy programmes.

As the Blueprint states:

“There can be no greater legacy of a major tournament than to protect the future of football itself.”

The framework identifies four priorities for future investment: protecting people, infrastructure, participation and gameplay. It then provides a practical model based around three funding tracks—new developments, facility upgrades and dedicated resilience funds—and six lifecycle phases covering funding, design, procurement, education, measurement and knowledge sharing.

Making Legacy Investments Last

Rather than calling for entirely new funding streams, Football For Future argues that climate adaptation should become a standard feature of existing tournament legacy investment.

Founder Elliot Arthur-Worsop explains:

“Climate resilience isn’t another legacy objective, it is what allows every other legacy objective to endure… There can be no greater tournament legacy than ensuring football continues changing lives long after the final whistle.”

The philosophy behind the Blueprint is captured in one simple line:

“By securing the places where we play our shared game, we help to protect our shared home.”

The organisation believes this approach could unlock a globally scalable model for financing climate adaptation through major sporting events, helping communities continue to benefit from investments long after tournaments have ended. It cites evidence that every US$1 invested in climate adaptation can generate more than US$10.50 in long-term social, economic and environmental benefits.

Players Become the Voice of Adaptation

Alongside the Blueprint sits the newly established Playable Future Coalition, bringing together current and former professional footballers to advocate collectively for climate-resilient grassroots football.

The campaign reflects the lived experience of many players, who describe training in extreme heat, playing on deteriorating pitches and watching community facilities become increasingly unplayable. The coalition is calling on tournament organisers to ensure future legacy programmes actively protect the local pitches where football begins.

Thailand international and Vitória SC goalkeeper Tiffany Sornpao, a founding member of the coalition, said:

“Every professional footballer started on a grassroots pitch. Those communities invested in us long before the world knew our names. Now it’s our turn to stand together and help protect them. Through The Playable Future Coalition, we’re calling on major tournaments to leave a legacy that keeps grassroots football safe, playable and thriving for generations to come.”

The Playable Future Blueprint arrives at an important moment for football governance. As governing bodies increasingly recognise climate risk, the conversation is beginning to move beyond mitigation towards resilience and adaptation.

Rather than presenting climate adaptation as another sustainability initiative, Football For Future positions it as the foundation upon which future participation, community investment and tournament legacy will depend. The Blueprint provides governing bodies, tournament organisers and national associations with a practical framework that can be integrated into existing funding and infrastructure programmes, ensuring today’s investments remain fit for tomorrow’s climate.
