Sustainable energy at the heart of latest updates approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council

16 October 2025 – Motor Racing

The FIA World Motor Sport Council held a virtual meeting on 16 October to discuss recent developments and future regulations. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem highlighted the organisation’s growth and digital advancements, including the new FIA office in London and the introduction of the FIA Digital Licensing Platform. The Council approved new regulations for Junior and Senior e-karting classes, promoting sustainable motorsport. Changes were also made to the FIA European Historic Rally Championship from 2026, creating dedicated championships for gravel and pre-2000 cars. Updates to the FIA Formula One World Championship’s technical and financial regulations were also approved, facilitating development opportunities for underperforming manufacturers. Amendments were accepted across various sporting calendars and competition regulations.

From Zermatt to Val di Fiemme: FIS development camps drive global ski collaboration

14 October 2025 – Winter Sports

In September, two development camps took place, one in Zermatt, Switzerland, focusing on speed events, and another in Val di Fiemme, Italy, for cross-country skiing. The Zermatt camp, held from 8-16 September, featured ideal conditions and successful collaboration, allowing participants to make significant progress in Super G and downhill disciplines. Young skiers from smaller nations gained invaluable experience alongside the Swiss women’s team. Meanwhile, the Italian camp, from 9-17 September, aimed to enhance classic and freestyle techniques, with participants engaged in dryland and roller ski training. Both camps offered opportunities for athletes and coaches to learn, improve, and collaborate.

Net Zero by 2040? Golf in search of climate goals

13 October 2025 – Golf

The golf industry faces challenges in significantly reducing CO₂ emissions to meet UN climate targets, with the Global Sustainable Sport survey highlighting confusion and mixed methods in the sports sector. Despite some understanding of climate urgency, clear leadership, dedicated funding, and credible measurement are lacking, especially regarding spectator travel. The European Golf Association (EGA) announced a new sustainability strategy, aiming to enhance golf’s societal contributions and improve its environmental profile, but did not specify concrete climate targets. With 49 national associations involved, a joint commitment to reducing CO₂ emissions remains elusive, though St. Andrews Links commits to climate neutrality.

Growing participation in Para & Inclusive Sailing – Why the numbers matter

10 October 2025 – Sailing

The Inclusive Development Programme (IDP), launched in 2023, significantly enhances global Para Inclusive Sailing, engaging 184 participants from 36 countries, with 38% being female. Clinics in Asia, Europe, and Oceania help build sustainable local programmes. By July 2025, 34 countries are represented in the Para Sailing Rankings, with World Sailing tracking activities in 45 countries, aiming for 40 ranked countries by 2029. Success stories like Zaida Pérez Bugueño from Chile demonstrate the programme’s impact. Events like the Asian Inclusive Sailing Series and the upcoming Inclusion Championships in Oman further bolster the sport’s inclusivity. The movement showcases sailing as a truly global, inclusive sport.

Mental Health first: A new playbook for Sport

10 October 2025 – Mental Health

Sport is being used globally as a tool to enhance mental well-being and foster resilience among youth, particularly those facing adversity like conflict or discrimination. Initiatives led by organisations such as Bergið Headspace in Iceland and Fundación Ayuda en Acción in Mozambique are examples of how sports programmes integrate mental health support into their activities. These projects provide counselling, educate on mental health, and promote inclusivity across various communities. Elite athletes and grassroots organisations are advocating for mental health awareness in sport to destigmatise struggles and create supportive environments. The adidas Foundation highlights these efforts to prioritise mental health in sport and encourage healing, joy, and community connection.

World’s First Global, Legally Binding Carbon Tax to Slash Emissions, Safeguard Ocean

07 October 2025 – Ocean

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is considering the world’s first global legally binding carbon price for the shipping industry at a meeting in London in October. If adopted, the IMO Net-Zero Framework would require large ships to reduce emissions by 17% by 2028, with stricter targets later, or incur fees. The shipping sector, responsible for 3% of global emissions, currently uses highly polluting fossil fuels. Ocean Conservancy’s Delaine McCullough praised the initiative as vital for climate and public health, though urged further efforts to ensure no loopholes exist. The IMO aims for net-zero emissions by 2050, advancing from previous goals.
