FIA Bestows Top Environmental Honours on Extreme H and WRC Promoter

06 March 2026

The drive toward a sustainable future for global motorsport reached a significant milestone this week as two major championships secured the highest possible recognition for their environmental efforts. Extreme H, the world’s first hydrogen-powered racing series, and WRC Promoter, the powerhouse behind the World Rally Championship, have both been awarded the prestigious FIA Three-Star Environmental Accreditation.

This accreditation, the gold standard of the FIA Environmental Accreditation Programme, is designed to help motorsport and mobility organisations measure, manage, and improve their environmental footprint. It ensures that best-practice management processes are implemented across entire operations, from event logistics to supply chains.

Extreme H: Hydrogen Leading the Charge

Announced in London on 2 March 2026, Extreme H’s achievement marks a historic moment for zero-emission racing. The championship’s success is built upon its Event Sustainability Management System, which focuses on three core pillars: Extreme Action, Extreme Impact, and Responsibly Extreme.

The series uses its high-performance Pioneer 25 race vehicle to test hydrogen fuel-cell technology in some of the planet’s most grueling off-road environments. Beyond the track, Extreme H acts as a “living laboratory,” having successfully validated a hydrogen fuel-cell microgrid in Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia, to power race paddocks without traditional generators.

Ali Russell, Managing Director of Extreme H, commented: “Securing the FIA Three-Star Environmental Accreditation is an incredibly proud moment for everyone at Extreme H. Our mission has always been to prove that high-performance racing and environmental responsibility can, and must, go hand-in-hand.”

WRC: A Legacy of Sustainability

While Extreme H is a newcomer to the three-star rank, WRC Promoter has successfully retained its accreditation, having first reached the top tier in 2023. The FIA’s report specifically commended the promoter’s clear environmental policies, senior management involvement, and rigorous carbon management tracking.

The WRC has long been a pioneer in this field; in 2016, it became the first FIA world championship to mandate three-star accreditation for all its event organisers. By 2027, the series expects this standard to be met by every team, supplier, and event organiser in its ecosystem.

Bernhard Hafenscher, WRC Promoter’s Innovation and Sustainability Lead, stated: “It reflects the work happening across our operations and with our partners to manage impact responsibly, and it gives us a strong platform to keep improving.”

A Global Blueprint for Mobility

The dual recognition of these championships signals a shift in the motorsport landscape. Willem Groenewald, FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility and Sustainability, noted that these milestones demonstrate how “high-performance competition can also set the benchmark for sustainability”.

By fostering alternative energy solutions and sustainable technologies, these series are providing a practical blueprint for the wider mobility sector to accelerate decarbonisation.
