NRG Park receives green-focused upgrades
Johnson Controls has embarked on a 20-year energy savings performance contract with Houston’s NRG Park and Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation (HCSCC).
The company, which focuses on the creation of safe, healthy and sustainable spaces and smart buildings, will help Harris County to reach its goal of a 40% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.
The deal is also expected to generate more than $54m in cost savings at the sport and entertainment complex, which will be reinvested back into the community.
NRG Park is a 350-acre event venue with three facilities, and hosts over 5.5 million visitors each year across more than 500 entertainment and sporting events. The park’s flagship NRG Stadium is the home of the NFL’s Houston Texans.
Johnson Controls coordinated the project, working to upgrade HVAC equipment (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), modernise building automation systems (BAS), water conservation, life safety systems and lighting improvements. Upgrades to high-efficiency chillers have been made as well as the integration of Johnson Controls OpenBlue Centre Utility Plant.
Commissioner Adrian Garcia, Precinct 2, Harris County, Texas, commented: “Making this sustainability goal a reality through this particular project is exciting for me. This project is a huge step in the right direction and we’re demonstrating to the country how committed we are here in Harris County.”
