Participation in initiatives like Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme is encouraged, alongside improving recycling, revising sustainability strategies, and phasing out single-use plastics. Clubs are advised to conduct sustainability audits, track carbon footprints, install solar panels, or appoint Green Champions. By joining the Sports Environment Alliance, organisations can contribute to meaningful environmental change.
Green Sports Alliance prepares for Green Sports Day 2025

Green Sports Day aims to leverage sports’ influence to promote sustainable living. Initiated by President Obama, the day encourages teams, leagues, fans, and communities to enhance their involvement in sustainability initiatives. Participants showcase innovations or commitments towards sustainability, highlighting community engagement projects. The global green sports community, including 116 sports entities and 25 athletes, unites to advocate for a sustainable sports industry. Celebrated in 14 countries, the day includes digital campaigns, community events, and climate action pledges. Various stories and innovations shared on social media (#GreenSportsDay) underscore the impact and ongoing efforts to build a greener sports future.
ASOIF workshop tackles pressing topics of International Federation governance

The Governance Workshop organised by the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) in Lausanne on 1 October focused on sports governance, IF election oversight, and the upcoming Review of IF Governance. Over 70 participants from 35 IFs, including ASOIF Governance Task Force (GTF) members, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and external experts attended. ASOIF President Ingmar De Vos highlighted governance as a priority for the Olympic Movement. The workshop addressed national sports governance, IF Technical Officials, and introduced new ASOIF GTF members. Discussions included oversight of referees and the role of national sports integrity bodies. The IOC updated attendees on integrity activities.
European Cycling Declaration Update

A European Cycling Declaration has been established, indicating that visible progress is being made in the sector. However, despite these positive developments, there is a clear and urgent call for the European Union to move beyond statements and political commitments. Advocates insist the EU must now turn its words into tangible and concrete actions to meaningfully advance cycling policy and infrastructure.
IBU Sustainability Awards 2025 Shortlist
30 September 2025 – Biathlon
The International Biathlon Union announced its shortlist for the 2025 Sustainability Awards, established in 2021 to promote impactful and replicable climate action. The goal is to highlight contributions to the IBU Sustainability Strategy 2020-2030 across five focus areas: climate, sport, venue, people, and communication. Shortlisted submissions for 2025 include: France’s 10-year plan emphasizing gender equality, Germany’s e-learning module for instructors , Norway’s food waste reduction course, Lenzerheide’s biodiversity mascot, Otepää’s sustainable catering, and Pokljuka’s educational initiative with Eco-Schools.
BBC Green Sports Awards Nominees announced

The BBC Green Sport Awards, held on 6 October 2025 at Broadcasting House, celebrate sustainability pioneers in sport. Nominees include Fran Kirby, who campaigns with WWF on nature and mental wellbeing, Hannah Mills for her anti-litter and climate initiatives, and Hector Pardoe, who highlights water pollution through swimming feats. Hector Bellerin, an ambassador for sustainability, has launched eco-friendly projects and campaigns. Jessie Diggins advocates against global warming effects on snow sports. Organisations like Arsenal and Formula E focus on net-zero initiatives. Notable projects include Sport England’s green funding and Jog On’s shoe recycling. The London Marathon implemented urine recycling for fertiliser.
Line up for season three of World Sailing’s Sustainability Sessions announced

The Sustainability Sessions, free and open to all, are expert-led webinars covering topics such as sustainable logistics, environmental impact reduction, and the role of sport in promoting change, with a focus on Para Inclusive Sailing and International Women’s Day. Commencing on 1 October 2025, the sessions begin with ‘Navigating a Sustainable Future’ featuring World Sailing and its logistics partner Kuehne+Nagel. Upcoming sessions will spotlight Oria Marine’s efficiency data, EurILCA’s plastic reduction efforts, and UpWind’s support for female sailors. World Sailing’s Alexandra Rickham highlighted the significant impact of these initiatives and emphasised their alignment with the ‘Ready for the Future 2025-2029’ strategy. The sessions aim to inspire change and promote sustainability across the sport. The programme is shortlisted for the Sport Positive Awards 2025. Rugby World Cup 2025 didn’t just raise the bar, it’s gone stratospheric’

The Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 shattered previous records, demonstrating significant growth in women’s rugby. World Rugby Chief Executive Alan Gilpin praised the tournament’s success, highlighted by England’s victory over Canada in front of a record-breaking 81,885 spectators at Twickenham. Ticket sales reached 444,465, over three times the figure from three years prior. The event attracted fans from 133 countries, with 53% being female, and 95% expressing a desire to attend again. The tournament has spurred commercial benefits, including boosting local hospitality industry revenues. Future growth is planned with the WXV Global Series to sustain momentum leading to the 2029 World Cup.
FIS CO₂ emissions report for the 2024/25 season shows progress and more precise measurement

FIS has successfully reported its 2024 carbon emissions, reducing its organisational carbon footprint by 7.5% to 1,999.2 tCO₂e via improved data collection and methodology, despite expanding the scope of measurement. Major progress includes the FIS CO₂ Calculator’s introduction, enhancing event emission accounting. The World Cup season produced 63,548 tCO₂e over 159 events, while the World Ski Championships generated 6,030 tCO₂e. Spectator travel remains the largest source of event emissions. FIS now reports with market-based and location-based emissions approaches, including changes like food emissions categorisation by type and radiative forcing adjustments for flights. Efforts continue to improve accuracy and reduce emissions further.
Hawks, State Farm, and More Than 5,000 Volunteers Pack One Million Meals in their Fifth Million Meal Pack to Fight Food Insecurity in Atlanta

WRC Rally Chile Bio Bío achieved the FIA’s highest environmental honour, the coveted Three-Star Environmental Accreditation, for setting a best-practice benchmark in motorsport stewardship. Following a meticulous audit, the event was recognized for demonstrating the highest standards of sustainability. The deep and complex accreditation process examined the rally’s environmental framework, including its CO2 emissions calculations and procurement practices rooted in sustainability principles. With a well-structured Environmental Management System and a forward-looking communication plan, the rally commits to ongoing improvements, with its next audit slated for October 2027.
The Frontrunners in the Race Against Climate Change: Meet the Climate Scientist

Envision Racing’s Race Against Climate Change Advisory Board aims to unite innovative minds to drive climate action. Professor Ed Hawkins, a climate scientist at the University of Reading, is renowned for his Climate Stripes, which visually depict global temperature changes. Originally an astrophysicist, Ed shifted to climate science due to its urgent relevance, focusing on clear communication to both the public and policymakers. Despite progress in climate acceptance, he warns against political setbacks, notably in the UK.
