Senior Scientist - Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM Amazonia)

Paulo Moutinho

Paulo Moutinho (63) holds a Ph.D. in ecology and has studied deforestation dynamics in the Amazon and the Cerrado for over thirty years, along with their consequences for biodiversity, climate change, and the population. He co-founded the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM Amazonia), a Brazilian scientific institution, of which he served as director twice. He has authored dozens of scientific articles and books and contributed to creating the Amazon Fund, the National Policy on Climate Change, and a mechanism for payment for environmental services under the UN Climate Convention.
He is a biking enthusiast and initiated an innovative program at IPAM titled “Adventure, Science, and Environment on Two Wheels.” It involves scientific expeditions conducted by researchers from the institute using bicycles as a means of transportation. The program originated from an expedition in the Amazon in 2017. Moutinho, another IPAM researcher, and an American astronaut cycled 1,200 km along an unpaved stretch of the Trans-Amazonian Highway. Moutinho is a senior scientist at IPAM Amazonia and a collaborating researcher at the Woodwell Climate Research Center, USA.
