Session 1 – Why sustainability in sport is a top-down governance issue with huge potential commercial gains alongside downside risks that need to be understood at C suite level

The future of all commercial programmes in sport depends upon protecting its Brand values through intangible assets. Intangible assets extend from IP to fans and community. Reputation underpins commercial programmes. Reputation requires an alignment of brand values between a sport organisation and its stakeholders. Without an ongoing and careful reassessment of that alignment any commercial programme in sport from the IOC down is at risk. Sustainability is not just about environmental issues important as they are but how an organisation responds to its stakeholder’s long term.

  • Provide an overview of some of the initiatives and examples that are already being adopted by sport.
  • Comment on why Brand values are so important for future development of commercial programmes.
  • Examples of existing regulations that currently require disclosure connected with its sustainability credentials and risks
  • A peep behind the curtain on regulation that is already in the pipeline
  • Explain why sustainability is a governance issue that must be addressed within any sports organisation at a board level.
  • Offer a view on why sports organisations must increasingly recognise the view of Athletes in developing their regulatory frameworks to stay in tune with its stakeholders
  • .
