World Rally Championship launches sustainable roadmap

WRC Promoter, the operator of the World Rally Championship, has launched its Sustainability Roadbook to provide clear frameworks and guidance for the sustainable future of rallying.

WRC Promoter’s roadmap outlines key action points for its sustainability operations, as well as goals for short, mid- and long-term change. The book also features actions already untaken by the promoter, with all initiatives aligning with the environmental strategy of motorsport’s governing body, the FIA.

The Roadbook further outlines separate ambitions and guidelines for both the FIA World Rally Championship and FIA European Rally Championship. Additionally, the roadmap falls under Beyond Rally, the promoter’s overarching platform for all sustainability initiatives.

"The Roadbook is WRC’s manifesto to guide and position our championships as a driving force for sustainable progress." WRC Promoter’s Head of Sustainability Santiago Peña Gomez

WRC Promoter implemented the FIA Environmental Accreditation Programme in 2016, switching to sustainable fuels in all Rally 1 and WRC2 cars in 2023 and committing to the safeguarding of UNESCO World Heritage Sites earlier this year.

Elsewhere, WRC Promoter has taken steps to reduce its own carbon footprint, working with its broadcast production partner NEP Finland to optimise offsite production in Helsinki, especially on events that take place outside of Europe.

“The Roadbook is WRC’s manifesto to guide and position our championships as a driving force for sustainable progress. It reflects the vision and collective will of our stakeholders to steer rallying towards a resilient and socially responsible future, recognising the challenges ahead and leveraging our innovative spirit to achieve long-term transformation,” said WRC Promoter’s Head of Sustainability Santiago Peña Gomez.
