World Netball encourages sporting family to reduce their carbon footprint

November 07 2024

World Netball, in collaboration with Net Zero Group, has launched a Carbon Engagement Portal to help clubs, players and organisations reduce their personal carbon footprint.

The body first partnered with Net Zero Group in July as part of its objective of working towards a net zero target of 2040. The partnership was announced alongside World Netball’s commitment to the United Nations’ Sport for Climate Action framework.

World Netball’s new Carbon Engagement Portal will enable users to take control of their carbon footprint through three steps: measure, reduce and share.

Users can input their data, including personal driving – such as trips to training or games – flights and energy use, before committing to actionable pledges to reduce their carbon footprint. This includes opting for active transport options such as walking or cycling.

“World Netball is on a journey to create a more sustainability-conscious Netball Family, and this portal is just one step towards achieving that." Dame Liz Nicholl DBE, President of World Netball

The Measure section will also see users add information on diet and shopping habits, with all data collated to provide an accurate picture of their environmental impact. Reduce will further inspire those to choose alternatives, such as eco-friendly driving or opting for local produce and food goods.

Finally, a personalised Climate Action Pledge can be shared across social media, celebrating personal actions, but also inspiring others to be more environmentally sustainable.

“We are thrilled to of launched our Carbon Sustainability Portal, alongside our partners the Net Zero Group, this week,” Dame Liz Nicholl DBE, President of World Netball, told Global Sustainable Sport.

“World Netball is on a journey to create a more sustainability-conscious Netball Family, and this portal is just one step towards achieving that.

“World Netball has confirmed its commitment to working towards a net zero target of 2040, and I am now looking forward to seeing the different pledges our Netball Family make globally in order to reduce their carbon footprint too.

“Together, we can create a better world through netball.”
