Sustainability round-up: World Taekwondo, British Cycling

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has concluded the first edition of its environmental sustainability training course, which was open to members of national ski associations and local organising committees, and FIS staff. There were 251 participants overall, with 143 being representatives of national ski associations and organising committees from 30 different countries. Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, which is home to the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakes and WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, as well as the NHL’s LA Kings, has installed AtmosAir Solutions Green Indoor Air Purification and Monitoring Technology to help monitor and record air quality. In 2023, the venue was awarded WELL Health Safety Rating by the International WELL Building Institute.

British Cycling has introduced a new initiative ‘The Sustainable Events Fund’, which has been designed to give communities a financial boost in taking action to reduce the environmental footprint of cycling events. The fund totals £25,000 offers 100 individual grants of £250, along with resources such as toolkits, and shared learning opportunities.

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) has partnered with You.Smart.Thing, which specialises in tailored travel plans to help organisations offer content-enhanced way finding and low-carbon routes for fans, guests or participants to events. You.Smart.Thing has worked with the likes of the Rugby League World Cup, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the All England Lawn Tennis Club and Manchester City.

The Bristol Bears rugby club has announced that its third annual Go Green fixture will take place during its Premiership game against Northampton Saints on October 25. Ashton Gate will turn green to promote Bristol Sport’s Project Whitebeam, which is a joint sustainability initiative between Bristol Bears men and women, Bristol City men and women, Bristol Flyers and Ashton Gate.

World Taekwondo launched its first mental health awareness action aimed at more than 1,500 athletes and officials at the Chuncheon 2024 World Taekwondo Junior Championships, which took place between October 1-6 in South Korea. World Mental Health Day takes place today (October 10).
