Sustainability round-up: Protect Our Winters Europe, LA Galaxy

Protect Our Winters (POW) Europe is set to launch POW Mobility Month 2024, an initiative dedicated to promoting sustainable transportation, with a special focus on cycling. Throughout September, POW will champion biking for all purposes, whether that is commuting or just for fun. The transport sector is Europe’s second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, contributing more than a quarter of all emissions on the continent.
Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy and Herbalife recently collaborated to help children and families get ready to go back to school. LA Galaxy players featured at a back-to-school, and community health and resource fair, at A Place Called Home earlier this month for 1,000 underserved students in Los Angeles.
Skateboard GB, in partnership with Samsung UK, is riding on the coattails of Paris 2024 and will offer 1,000 free beginner skateboard lessons at 20 skateparks across the UK to support participation growth. Skateboard GB is the national governing body for skateboarding in England and the home of Olympic skateboarding in Great Britain.
The Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS presented by Circle K golf competition is set to return to Jacksonville, Florida with a focus on sustainability. Scheduled for September 30 to October 6, the event has aimed to create a lasting, positive impact on both the environment and the community.
The US Open has accepted New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ invitation to join the Mayor’s Office for Food Policy’s Plant-Powered Carbon Challenge. As part of the challenge, the tennis major has joined other citywide signatories, and has committed to making a 25% reduction in its food-related carbon footprint by 2030 as one of the pillars of its comprehensive and wide-ranging sustainability programme.
Kate Strong, an expert in change behaviour, emergent strategy and sustainability, has recently published a book detailing her journey around Britain on a handmade bamboo bike. Covering 3,300 miles, Strong visited more than 50 communities, projects, companies and schools, each contributing to the fight against the climate crisis. Titled Climate Cycle, the book is a rallying cry for change.
The new Cycling for All & Sustainability Awards from the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) will recognise outstanding initiatives implemented by individuals, teams, National Federations, event organisers, and more, to protect the environment and be more sustainable. Trophies will be awarded in four categories: UCI Cycling for All Award; UCI Climate Action Award; UCI Bike City Award; and UCI Rainbow Award.
