The International Biathlon Union (IBU), in partnership with the other SIEPPUR project partners and co-funded by the European Commission, held the Sustainable Snow Summit this week which brought together leading Nordic snow sports experts to discuss sustainable snow management strategies, and good practice from venues across Europe – from production, storage, transport, grooming to handling.
Midway through the SIEPPUR research project, the virtual Summit provided an opportunity for all those involved in the snow sport industry to learn and exchange on the topic of sustainable snow management.
Topics included the mid-term findings of the SIEPPUR project on the current state of snow management from production, storage, transport, grooming to handling in Europe, various examples of good practice, a case study of the NMNM 2024 Biathlon World Championships from the snow management perspective, the latest on sustainable grooming, and a panel discussion on the future strategies for snow management at Nordic venues.
Following an alert from the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), the European Commission and EU consumer authorities (Network of Consumer Protection Cooperation – CPC – Authorities) sent letters to 20 airlines with details of potentially misleading green claims. The bodies further invited the airline businesses to bring their practices in line with EU consumer law within 30 days.
The United States SailGP Team has brought appointed alpine skier and three-time Olympic medalist Lindsey Vonn as a member of the board of directors. The US team is one of 10 national teams to take part in SailGP, which is currently halfway through its fourth season.

Team GB marathon swimmers will receive vaccinations for typhoid and hepatitis A amid ongoing concern over the water quality of the River Seine in Paris. According to reports, the athletes will receive the jabs in the run up to Paris 2024 and will take antibiotics following the events.
Christchurch company WasteCo has said it was “concerned” that a cricket fan at a recent game between New Zealand and Australia saw recycling bins being tipped into skips with general waste. WasteCo “self-reports” on its obligations under environmental law, but was audited annually by environmental certification platform Toitū, a spokesperson said. Venues Ōtautahi and WasteCo later acknowledged 52 skips of recycling and waste were taken to landfill.
Rugby league side Leeds Rhinos recently renewed its commitment to reducing waste and the use of plastic at AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium. The Rhinos are currently developing plans for a long-term sustainability and environmental strategy that will support the team in becoming net zero carbon by 2030.
