The family office of Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, HF Capital, has committed $725m to help launch an initiative that is designed to decarbonise heavy industry in the US. The funds will be managed by private equity firm Ara Partners, with investments aimed at power generation, biofuels for the marine shipping industry and other sectors, and energy supply and distribution businesses. Not only does Haslam own the National Football League’s (NFL) Browns, but also Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Columbus Crew. He also has a stake in the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Milwaukee Bucks.
Liverpool FC’s sustainability strategy, The Red Way, was named ESG Programme of the Year at this year’s Global Sustainability & ESG Awards 2024. The awards were held in London at Sustainability LIVE, and honoured the English Premier League club’s commitment to sustainability. The club’s LFC Foundation supported 123,000 people during the 2022-23 season, while also reducing emissions by 29%.
Duna Energy Systems has joined the Sport Impact Summit as a principal partner. The event will take place at Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai on December 4-5, and Duna will use the opportunity to present its E3 Node proof-of-concept prototype, which uses gravitational energy to produce clean, renewable power.
The Bristol City Women football team has retained its title of Champions of the Pledgeball League for the 2023-24 season. The achievement recognises the Women’s Super League 2 side and its fans in taking action to #ProtectWhereWePlay through the Pledgeball initiative.
Seven candidates have been named in the race to replace Thomas Bach as President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The winner will have to contend with challenges around sustainability, funding and promoting activity. The candidates are Prince Feisal al Hussein; Lord Sebastian Coe; Kirsty Coventry; Johan Eliasch; David Lappartient; Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr; and Morinari Watanabe. The candidates will present their programmes to IOC members in January, with the new president revealed in March.
Ireland’s National Basketball Arena has been granted permission for a €38m redevelopment, with environmental aspects set to be a central part of the plans. Some 55 EV charge points and solar panels will be installed, while the building will also be constructed to the highest energy efficient standards, according to Basketball Ireland.
