Sustainability central to ITTF’s new continental agreements
Sustainability, social responsibility and good governance have been earmarked as central pillars in the International Table Tennis Federation’s (ITTF) newly agreed Strategic Quadrennial Agreements (SQA) with four continental federations.
The landmark agreements were signed by ITTF and the bodies representing Africa, the Americas, Europe and Oceania at a ceremony in Chengdu, China, and will cover a four-year period from 2025 to 2028.
The SQAs are designed to streamline cooperation between the global governing body and the continental federations, with several of the key areas relevant to the sustainability of the sport.
Crucially, the specific pillars for collaboration cover efforts to foster sustainability by implementing environmentally conscious practices; strengthen governance structures for greater efficiency and accountability; and expand social responsibility initiatives through table tennis as a tool for positive change.
The other stated aims include enhancing continental events to attract greater participation and visibility; promoting grassroots development; and advancing commercialisation and professionalisation of table tennis activities.
“The Strategic Quadrennial Agreements mark a pivotal moment for our global table tennis family,” said ITTF President Petra Sörling. “By aligning our efforts and resources with the unique needs and aspirations of each continent and member associations, we can elevate the sport to new heights. These agreements reflect our shared vision for excellence, development and inclusivity in every corner of the world.”
European Table Tennis Union President Pedro Moura (pictured alongside Sörling) described the agreement as “a pivotal moment”. He added: “We are very happy to have this agreement concluded before the end of the year allowing to immediately align our 2025 objectives with ITTF.”

ITTF-Americas President Juan Vila explained that a key aim for his organisation over the new four-year period is to establish a permanent academy “where our young talents can find all the necessary support to grow”.
Meanwhile, ITTF-Africa President Wahid Oshodi commented that “the objectives outlined in the SQA fully align with the vision and direction of the new board of ITTF-Africa under my leadership”.
ITTF-Oceania President Anthony Moore described the development as “a significant milestone for ITTF-Oceania that has been many months in the making”. Moore added: “ITTF are our biggest and closest partner and we have full faith that together we can take table tennis to a higher level over the next four years and beyond.”
