Santini – Locally sourced materials for UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow
On the occasion of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow and around Scotland, we produced for the UCI, staff and media bibs from totally recyclable materials creating a supply chain made up of five zero-mile companies, all located in the Province of Bergamo.
We took a garment which has a very limited life span and designed it already thinking about its second life after use. The UCI Glasgow bibs are made using Radicigroup eco nylon yarn to produce a totally recyclable single-fibre material fabric by Sitip, printed using certified EFI Reggiani water-based inks and special transfer paper that does not consume water and requires a minimal amount of energy per square metre, stitched by us using only thread and components made from nylon or chemically similar materials, allowing the bibs to enter the recycling process at the end of their lives without any further processing.
And what is more exciting is that we have already thought about what these bibs would turn into once RadiciGroup will proceed with the regranulation of recovered materials. Thanks to Acerbis these bibs could see new life as X-Elite handguards, which are attached to the handlebars of some mountain bikes to protect the riders’ hands and shield the brake levers during falls. A choral work made in our own city, Bergamo, and a further step towards a more sustainable future.
