The Los Angeles Kings National Hockey League (NHL) side has collaborated with utilities company SoCalGas to support the City of Los Angeles’ restoration efforts of the 51-mile LA River.

Once the primary water supply for the greater Los Angeles basin, the river has been impacted by years of neglect and urban development. This has impacted water quality and surrounding wildlife habitats.

Working with Friends of the LA River, employee volunteers from the Kings and SoCalGas helped to revitalise native habitats for plants and animals at Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve.

Volunteers were guided by the California Native Plant Society in the removal of invasive plants from the upper LA River area to restore natural balance of the ecosystem and support the native plant and wildlife species.

The California Native Plant Society is dedicated to conserving California native plants and their natural habitats, while increasing the understanding, enjoyment, and horticultural use of native plants.

“This revitalising project reflects both the LA Kings and SoCalGas’ commitment to making an environmental impact in our city." Celia Garth, Community Relations Coordinator at the LA Kings

Friends of the LA River has worked for more than 30 years to restore community connection and natural ecology. The organisation educates, empowers and mobilises members of the community to repair habitats.

“This revitalising project reflects both the LA Kings and SoCalGas’ commitment to making an environmental impact in our city,” said Celia Garth, Community Relations Coordinator at the LA Kings. “Our collective actions today helped transform a flood control channel into a healthy and thriving ecosystem and new habitat. We are proud to partner with Friends of the River and California Native Plant Society to support this vital community effort to rejuvenate and restore the river.”

The efforts form part of LA Kings Green, a multifaceted programme supported by players, staff, fans and partners aiming to address the impact of climate change. Established in 2016, the programme aligns with AEG’s 1Earth. Sports and live entertainment giant AEG owns 50% of the LA Kings, with the 1Earth programme aiming to reduce its environmental impact.
