Poland’s latest stadium project paves way for green venues
Construction work has been completed at Poland’s new Opole Stadium (not pictured), which has been earmarked as one of the country’s most sustainable sports venues thanks to innovative technology and ecological solutions.
Building work began in June 2022 and, after its completion this month, the venue will officially open its doors to the public in March 2025.
The stadium has included renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic panels mounted on the west, east and south sides, as well as heat pumps for club rooms and cogeneration units, which simultaneously produce electricity and heat.
The solar panels will have a capacity of around 280 KW, and spaces were incorporated in the green areas around the stadium for insects and small animals to thrive and live.
Opole Stadium is located in the south of Poland and will have a capacity of 11,600. It will be the new home of Odra Opole, which plays its football in I Liga, the men’s second tier below the Ekstraklasa.
The venue also boasts 400 cubic metres of rainwater tanks that are located under the east stand. They will be used for irrigation purposes concerning the turf and greenery around the stadium, while rainwater will also be used to flush toilets.
