Golf’s DP World Tour Championship to be most sustainable to date, claim officials
Organisers have claimed that this year’s DP World Tour Championship in the United Arab Emirates will be the most environmentally friendly edition yet, thanks to initiatives such as the “Earth lounge” and widespread recycling.
Golf’s European Tour season-ending event is scheduled to run from today until Sunday (November 19) and is operated in line with the United Nations’ Sports for Climate Action Framework.
The competition, reaching its 15th edition, will feature the Earth lounge on the 16th hole which is fully powered by solar panels and hydrogen generators that produce zero carbon emissions.
Organisers have enlisted Averda as the official waste management company to achieve the aim of recycling 75% of all event waste.
A ban on plastic water bottles is also being enforced for the third year running, while free water walls will return. In previous editions, these walls dispensed more than 60,000 litres of water.
“These important innovations ultimately reflect our commitment to halving our emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero carbon by 2034.”
The Earth Course in Dubai, where the competition is due to take place, will not be overseeded again this year with the measure so far saving more than 20 million litres of water.
“As a Tour we are making innovative strides in the sustainability space, including introducing a 100& green hydrogen fuelled TV production at the BMW PGA Championship – a world first for sport,” said DP World Tour Head of Sustainability, Maria Grandinetti-Milton.
