Global Sustainable Sport and Mass Participation World Announce Strategic Partnership to Tackle Global Inactivity, Obesity and develop a new Sustainable Model for Mass Participation.
London, 16th October 2024 – Global Sustainable Sport (GSS), a leading advocate for sustainable practices in sports, is proud to announce a new strategic partnership with Mass Participation World (MPW), the premier global platform for mass participation events.
This collaboration aims to address the critical issue of physical inactivity and obesity, which is a growing concern worldwide, by harnessing the power of mass participation events to engage and activate individuals across the globe. The World Health Organisation estimated that over 1 billion people are affected by obesity globally and 1.4 billion people are classified as inactive.
The partnership will focus on creating innovative strategies and initiatives to encourage governments, cities and sports organisations to develop strategies around mass participation to increase physical activities, especially among inactive populations and those who are unengaged with traditional sports. Leveraging the global reach and expertise of both GSS and MPW, the collaboration will drive awareness and action towards healthier lifestyles, with a particular focus on sustainable and inclusive mass participation events.
Key elements of the partnership include:
1. Mass Participation Assessment: GSS and MPW will co-develop a framework for mass participation events which will help event organisers and owners identify the true sustainable value of their events. This framework will help create new commercial opportunities for mass participation events whilst at the same time promoting more sustainable activations
2. Sustainable Event Practices: Both organisations are committed to sustainability in sports, and the partnership will ensure that all initiatives align with sustainable practices. From minimising environmental impact to promoting healthier communities, the collaboration will showcase how mass participation events can serve as a model for sustainability.
3. Research and Advocacy: The partnership will contribute to research on the effectiveness of mass participation in reducing obesity and improving overall health, both mental and physical. The findings will be shared with governments, cities, health organisations, and sporting bodies to influence policy and drive change at both local and global levels.
4. Community Engagement: Through MPW’s global network, the partnership will engage local communities, sports organizations, and grassroots movements to create inclusive, accessible, and enjoyable events. These events will not only promote physical activity but also foster a sense of belonging and improve mental well-being.
5. Education: Starting with the GSSport24 Winter Workshop series, running from mid-October to the end of November, and MPW24, the 9thedition of Mass Participation World Conference in Ho Chi Minh City from 5-7 December, MPW and GSS will bring industry leaders together to explore and share best practices.
"We are excited to partner with Global Sustainable Sport in addressing one of the most pressing health challenges of our time. By using mass participation events, we can inspire millions to take the first step towards a healthier, more active lifestyle.”
“Together with MPW, we believe that sport has the power to transform lives and communities. This partnership will bring us closer to creating a healthier and more sustainable future for the mass participation industry and for sport as a whole.”
