Formula E supported by Aggreko to power events sustainably

April 11 2024

All-electric racing championship Formula E will continue its mission in being the world’s first net zero carbon sport, with its events to be powered by sustainable technology provided by Aggreko.

Aggreko will power events via renewable energy such as biofuel generators, solar arrays and the latest battery technology. Organisers say implementing these solutions will aid the series in achieving its emissions reductions target of 45% across Scopes 1,2 and 3 by 2030, from a Season 5 (2019) baseline.

For select races, Aggreko will supply six 300kVA batteries to charge all Formula E cars, as well as varying battery sizes to power the overall circuit at race locations. Each battery is capable of charging four race cars simultaneously.

These will be backed up by Stage V Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) powered generators, which emit up to 90% less CO2 emissions. Additionally, selected tracks will be using solar arrays to assist in powering batteries.

“Sustainability is at the heart of all what we do in Aggreko, making it the perfect fit for the world's most sustainable motorsport series." David de Behr, Head of Sales, Aggreko Event Services

With the majority of Formula E’s international races being street tracks, temporary measures from Aggreko help race weekends run as seamlessly as possible.

“Sustainability is at the heart of all what we do in Aggreko, making it the perfect fit for the world’s most sustainable motorsport series. Aggreko is aiding Formula E’s energy transition journey, supporting its goal to reduce overall emissions by 45% and maintain its position as the ‘world’s most sustainable sport’, and in line with our passion to deliver temporary clean energy solutions to the events industry,” commented David de Behr, Head of Sales, Aggreko Event Services.

Elsewhere, Formula E announced that the support series NXT Gen Cup – which was set to be the world’s first 100% electric junior touring car cup – will be cancelled for this year.

The NXT Gen Cup was due to make its debut on the Formula E schedule at the Misano E-Prix double-header this weekend (April 12-14). However, due to unexpected constraints faced by the support series, it will no longer be an addition to the World Championship calendar in Season 10.
