ATP Finals champion sustainability in Turin
Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner may have claimed his maiden Nitto ATP Finals trophy over the weekend, but organisers have also championed sustainability by supporting a tree planting project.
Corporate hospitality guests at this year’s Finals were able to choose a tree to plant as a welcome gift.
The tournament has participated in a reforestation project promoted by Treedom, a platform that allows the planting of trees worldwide, helping to reduce the environmental impact of the Finals.
It is predicted that some 11,000 trees will have been planted as a result, culminating in the Nitto ATP Finals Corporate Hospitality Forest.
Elsewhere at the tournament, visitors to the Fan Village were greeted by The Green Wall, an installation created by title sponsor Nitto, ATP and the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP). Fans could explore Japanese adhesive manufacturing company Nitto’s initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions and promote environmental responsibility.
Guests were also able to learn about CO2 reduction while playing a game that simulates collecting CO2, while also engaging with the ‘Art Wall’.
Following the conclusion of the Finals on Sunday, the Green Wall will be moved to another location in Turin, in line with the Italian city’s sustainability goals as one of the European Commission’s 100 ‘Mission Cities’ working towards climate neutrality by 2030.
The Fan Village also featured Nitto-coloured smart recycling bins, which automatically compresses the rubbish using stored electricity generated by solar panels.
In 2023, the tournament helped plant 40 trees around the Inalpi Arena where the Finals are played, added green roofs to select bus stops and donated €100,000 to the Municipality of Turin to support further sustainability initiatives.
