The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has embarked upon developing the nation’s first co-designed National Sport Participation Strategy in partnership with the sector’s stakeholders.
Building on the launch of Australia’s High Performance 2032+ Sport Strategy, which provides a pathway to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane in nine years’ time, the new strategy aims to transform the way participation is connected, delivered and supported in the country.
Sector partners have been invited to submit expressions of interest in joining a project steering group that will guide and support the development of the strategy, which is due to launch in October 2023. The ASC has set a deadline of February 8 for receiving the expressions of interest.
“The steering group will consist of up to 12 members that bring knowledge and expertise from within and beyond the sports sector,” the ASC said.
“Importantly, members must represent a cross section of Australia to reflect the diversity of the sport participation community now and into the future.”

The ASC added that it is confident the strategy will reimagine how sports participation is delivered in Australia.
Specifically, the objectives of the strategy include connecting and aligning stakeholders that support the delivery of sport participation; reimagining how participation is delivered in Australia and defining the strategic intent of participation; and changing the face of sports participation to ensure it reflects the broader representation of Australian society now and in the future.
Other objectives include clarifying the roles and responsibilities of the sport participation system across government and sport; and creating a formal project governance structure to reflect the diversity of the sport system and maximise the number of Australians contributing to insights, ideas and project outcomes.
