The Abu Dhabi Cycling Club has signed up to the Union Cycliste Internationale’s (UCI) Climate Action Charter to power sustainability and inspire others to utilise this greener form of transport.

The Abu Dhabi Cycling Club is among a number of clubs and teams across the Middle East and Asia to join the international cycling governing body’s programme.

Signing the initiative aligns with the Bike Abu Dhabi initiative launched in November 2021, which hopes to spearhead the emirate’s long-term vision to become a leading global cycling hub, while also promoting the activity as a sustainable form of transport.

As part of the programme – which is promoting the growth of the sport in the emirate – significant infrastructure enhancements have already begun. This includes an extension of Abu Dhabi’s 300km cycling network to over 1,000km, and the 109km Abu Dhabi loop – a segregated cycleway that links key destinations across the city.

“The recent period has witnessed the launch of many environmentally friendly community events and outings focusing on sustainability." Al Nekhaira Al Khaili, Chief Executive of the Abu Dhabi Cycling Club

“In line with the directives of the leadership to extend the Year of Sustainability for another year, the Abu Dhabi Cycling Club has signed and joined the UCI’s Climate Action Charter, to promote sustainability in cycling,” said Al Nekhaira Al Khaili, Chief Executive of the Abu Dhabi Cycling Club.

“The recent period has witnessed the launch of many environmentally friendly community events and outings focusing on sustainability. The club has also introduced medals made from recyclable materials like wood and encouraged sustainability as a lifestyle choice for all segments of society, leading to greater participation.”

The UCI is an active advocate for improving sustainability within and through cycling, and last year launched its Sustainability Impact Tracker, an online platform that will allow the sport’s stakeholders to measure their impact.

Al Khaili added: “As part of the club’s responsibility and following the leadership’s announcement to extend the Year of Sustainability into this year, we will work to implement numerous programmes, submit proposals and develop strategic plans in the coming period to build a sustainable sport that serves and conserves the environment.”
